Academic Success Coaches

Academic Success Coaches are peer advisors trained to assist with time management, study habits, social interaction, and more. Our coaches come from a variety of backgrounds and majors, but they all share the same goal: help their fellow students succeed at Michigan Tech.

Something about my Tech experience: I had a wonderful time in my hall in Wads.  We participated as a group in so many different events that I feel that I have had every opportunity to fully have the Tech Experience!

As an international student, I was not sure what to expect of a different culture; however, Michigan Tech community inspired and supported me since my very beginning which made me feel like home. As a varsity athlete I have developed valuable skills which I would like to share with people in order to help them thrive and achieve their personal and professional goals.

Growing up in the U.P. I heard a lot about Michigan Tech.  I've wanted to go here since I was 13.  My first few semesters were rough, academically speaking.  I wasn't in the right major, and didn't have the study habits and time management skills.  After exploring my options and switching majors, I turned my grades around.  I've made the Dean's list the last couple semesters and just finished my first internship.  Overall, I've been very successful here at Tech and I am glad I get to help others be successful too.

When I first got to Michigan Tech, I had no idea what I wanted to major in.  I just knew that I was good at math and science in high school and that Michigan Tech offered mostly STEM majors.  I visited several schools and wasn't very excited about them, but when I arrived on Tech's campus, I knew I wanted to come here.  I'm not exactly sure why but I just felt at home and that I could be myself here.  Picking a major was a difficult one for me, but I took a class called Exploring Majors and it helped so much.  I could not be more happy with the major I chose.  I love the sense of community we have due to our small size.  Attending Michigan Tech has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.  I have grown and learned so much about myself since I have been here.  The second best decision I have ever made was becoming an Orientation Team Leader (and then doing it two more times).  Being an OTL is an amazing experience because you meet so many incredible people, learn about yourself, become a leader, and help new students.

Michigan Tech has truly become a home for me. I find myself learning and experiencing more each day. The students, faculty, and staff provide countless opportunities for fun, learning, and achieving your dreams. I enjoy Michigan Tech and know I am in the right place because it feels like home, the classes are interesting and provide a challenge, and the rewards for hard work are endless. I truly enjoy talking to, helping, and working with other Tech students. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and its endless beauty has always held a special place in my heart. The area is absolutely beautiful and filled with adventure. I look forward to the many fun times and experiences the UP and Michigan Tech has yet to offer!

The first time I visited Tech, I was worried about it being far away from family. A trip through the Keweenaw and three years later, I'm so happy that I made this place my home. Michigan Tech keeps you on your toes; my time here has been filled with challenge, though those challenges have been balanced with amazing experiences and opportunities I know I wouldn't have had anywhere else. I'm so excited to be an Academic Success Coach and hope that my time in the office will lead to success and opportunities for those that I interact with.

Being at Michigan Tech has been such a wonderful experience for me.  I've learned so much both in and out of the classroom, the area is incredibly beautiful and full of adventures, and I have made many amazing friends.  There is so much camaraderie among everyone on campus,  I loved being and OTL and hope to continue helping others get the most out of their time at Michigan Tech and love it as much as I do.

Being at Michigan these past few years has greatly impacted my life. The community here is amazing and the people are also really amazing. Since I have been up at Michigan Tech I have learned a lot about my major and about myself through working with people who are not only highly motivated but also genuinely care about you succeeding. Michigan Tech and the people at Tech have become my family, a family that keeps getting larger every single day.

Michigan Tech is, by far, one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It taught me everything from the rules of racquetball to sound leadership in a diverse environment.  Some of the memorable times include my work with USG, Leadershape 2017, and winter carnival.  These experiences have brought me to where I am today; and Academic Success Coach with a vision for the future. I hope to impact several students by giving back to the Tech community with everything that I've learned.

Michigan Tech has been one heck of a ride and still continuing!!  I've definitely been challenged and have grown a lot compared to when I first stepped foot on this campus.  The most important piece of advise I was given during my freshman year from a senior at that time was:
" There"re  two steps to succeed as a student at Michigan Tech:
1.  Know all the resources that you would need
2. USE THEM!!"
Ever since then I have adhered to this advise. I have also learned from my fair share of mistakes. I joined the Waino Wahtera Student Success Center because I want to do my part in helping prevent other students from making the same mistakes I made.
