Information Systems

What is Informations Systems?

Information systems (IS) is the application of information and system technologies to organizational and managerial needs. Almost every industry and field relies upon information systems and technologies to compete in the marketplace, to streamline current operations, and to create effective work environments. Information systems professionals analyze, design, develop, implement, and manage a wide range of computer-based information systems. The strength of an IS professional is his/her ability to work with both the human element and the computer-based technologies within an organization to take advantage of opportunities and to solve problems.

Why study Information Systems?

An IS degree opens the door to an almost boundless set of professional career opportunities. The SBE's IS program provides a solid foundation in both business and computing technologies, which enables the IS majors to pursue managerial and technical career tracks in most public and private organizations. IS majors may work in tradititional IS positions such as programmer-analysts, systems analysts, database analysts, database administrators, network specialists, Internet/website developers, or systems support and training specialists. Alternatively, they may act as liaisons between business' information systems functions and their functional areas (e.g., finance or marketing) or may find career opportunities with information services consulting firms.
