A minor in economics is a program of study where a student becomes acquainted with basic concepts and more advanced topics in economics. The minor in economics requires 18 credit hours of economics courses in addition to the regular requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree at MTU. The 18 credit hours are split into 9 credit hours of principles and theory economics courses and 9 credit hours of economics electives.
The minor in economics is meant to supplement a technical and specialized degree. It provides depth and breadth to a university education and provides an expanded understanding of the roles of decision makers in an economy as well as the role of government in an economy. Additionally, the minor in economics serves as a strong background for professional degrees such as the MBA, Law and actuarial science.
The minor in economics is not intended to be a career-oriented program. Instead, it will serve as a complement to a technical degree in business, engineering, science or forestry.
