Why Choose the SBE?

Professional Accreditation

The SBE is accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), the world's premiere accrediting body for collegiate business programs. Only 1 out of 3 business programs in the US is AACSB-accredited.

What does accreditation mean to you?  It means you are getting the best business education.  Some employers only hire graduates from AACSB-accredited programs, and some graduate schools only accept students from AACSB-accredited programs.  Accreditation also facilitates transfer of credits to other accredited programs.

Small Classes and Quality Faculty

With 500 students and 30 faculty, you can expect small classes and close interaction with faculty. Upper division classes in your concentration are taught by PhD qualified faculty in their respective disciplines and professionally qualified faculty with significant experience in business.   Many faculty have won teaching awards and use the latest technology to deliver instruction.

High Student Satisfaction and Learning

Graduating seniors consistently give high ratings to SBE advising, SBE faculty-student interaction, SBE instruction, and overall satisfaction with their SBE education—higher than their counterparts at most other business programs.  Graduating seniors taking the Educational Testing Services' Major Field Test in Business Administration consistently score above the 80th percentile when compared with students at other institutions.

Discovery-Based Learning

We strongly encourage dynamic, experiential learning that integrates instruction, research and innovation—in short, learning by doing.   SBE instructors incorporate experiential activities and simulations into many classes, and students work in many team projects both inside and outside the classroom.  SBE students are also strongly encouraged to join an Enterprise and take advantage of co-op and internship opportunities.

Technology Focus

Michigan Tech's mission is to create the future by linking business and technology. There are many ways the School of Business & Economics encourages our students to be prepared for a global technological workplace.  The SBE has state of the art computing facilities and coursework emphasizes hands-on information technology and computing applications.  The SBE curriculum emphasizes business applications in a global technological environment.  We also encourage students to use their electives to learn more about science and technology in a variety of disciplines and participate in the Enterprise Program.  With many engineering students electing a second degree in business, business majors often work in teams with engineers and scientists.

Innovation Focus – The Enterprise Program

One of the best ways to learn about the linkage between business and technology is to join an Enterprise where industry-sponsored interdisciplinary student teams work on solving real-world problems.  SBE students currently play leading roles in several Enterprises—IT Oxygen, Husky Game Development, Wireless Communication, Entrepreneurial Enterprise and Scientific & Technical Communication Arts.

Co-ops/Internships

The SBE encourages its students to take advantage of cooperative education and internships with industry. Co-ops involve taking a semester from your academic program to work in a supervised position related to your business major. Internships involve working for a summer in a supervised position related to your studies. Co-ops and internships are usually well paid and provide valuable experience to add to your resume when you begin your employment search. Many business organizations use co-ops and internships to select the students they will hire for full time employment after graduation.

Foreign Study

The environment of business is global.  Take advantage of Michigan Tech's  International Programs and Services with universities around the world.  SBE students have studied in France, Mexico, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and Australia.  With a little planning, language study and a study-abroad experience, you can earn an International Business Certificate.

Safe Community

Houghton and its sister city Hancock offer a safe, clean, small-town environment. Downtown is within easy walking distance of the campus.

Outdoor Activities

If you like the outdoors, Michigan Tech is the place for you. The University has a golf course, cross country ski trails, mountain biking trails, and a ski hill within minutes of campus, as well as excellent on-campus athletic facilities. Hunting, fishing, swimming, and hiking are within walking distance of campus.
