SBE Policies and Procedures

The course instructor, the student's concentration advisor, and the Dean's Office (in practice, the Associate Dean) must approve requests to waive a course prerequisite.

Procedures
  1. The student should discuss plans for waivers with their concentration advisors as part of the regular advising process.
  2. The student obtains a SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form (available in the SBE Office of Academic Services) and the appropriate University Prerequisite Waiver Form.
  3. The student completes Section I of the SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form and the appropriate University Waiver Form and submits both Forms to the instructor of the course for which a waiver of prerequisite is being requested.
  4. The instructor will complete the "Reason for Waiving Course Prerequisite" portion of the SBE Form and sign both the SBE and the University Forms if he/she determines that the prerequisite waiver is appropriate.
  5. The student then submits the SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form to his/her concentration advisor for approval. The student's concentration advisor will sign the Form if he/she determines that the prerequisite waiver is appropriate.
  6. The student then submits the completed SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form and the appropriate University Prerequisite Waiver Form to the Dean's Office. The Dean's Office will approve the waiver only after it is satisfied that there is sufficient justification to do so.
  7. If the Dean's Office approves the waiver, the student will submit the University Prerequisite waiver form (signed by the course instructor and Dean's Office) to the Registrar in order to gain admittance to the course. The SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form will be filed in the student's file in the SBE Office of Academic Services.
  8. The Registrar's Office will be instructed to accept only those University Prerequisite Forms signed by BOTH the instructor AND the Dean's Office.
  9. The Dean's Office will submit approved SBE Prerequisite Waiver Forms semi-annually to the SBE Curriculum Committee for its review.

The course instructor and the Dean's Office (in practice, the Associate Dean) must approve requests to waive a class standing prerequisite.

Sophomore standing: For internal SBE purposes, 24 credits, exclusive of credits earned through Advanced Placement testing, will define sophomore class standing. (Note: the University uses 30 credits to define sophomore class standing.)

Junior standing: For internal SBE purposes, 54 credits, exclusive of credits earned through Advanced Placement testing, will define junior class standing. (Note: The University uses 60 credits to define junior standing.)

Procedures

Students may use either procedure below to waive a class standing prerequisite.

  1. The student will present the University Waiver Form to the course instructor and to Dean's Office for approval. If approved, the student will present the University Waiver Form to the Registrar's Office in order to register in the course. The Registrar's Office will be instructed to accept only those University Prerequisite Forms signed by both the instructor and the Dean's Office.
  2. The student will discuss waiver of the class standing prerequisite with the course instructor. If the instructor approves the waiver, he/she will communicate orally or via email with the SBE's Director of Academic Services who will arrange to have the waiver submitted electronically.

The University Office of Student Affairs--not the SBE--approves late drops. To request a late drop, the student must submit a letter to Dr. Gloria Melton, Associate Dean of Students. According to University policy (see drop policy section of student handbook) "Only those written requests that clearly involve extenuating circumstances will be considered. Extenuating circumstances include prolonged illness, serious accidents, death in the immediate family or of a close friend, or similar situations truly beyond the student's control."

If requested, the instructor of the course may submit a letter of support (to the Office of Student Affairs) for the late drop. Likewise, if requested, the Dean's Office or the SBE Office of Academic Services may submit a letter of support to for a late drop. The Dean's Office or the SBE Office of Academic Services will submit letters of support in only in cases of truly extenuating circumstances and only if the instructor of the course approves the late drop.
