Associate Professor, Social Sciences

Expert in: Industrial Archeology

Tim Scarlett believes in what he calls “a dramatically interdisciplinary, public archaeology.” He combines field work with community involvement, welcoming the public to visit the Cliff Mines and Clifton town site excavations in Michigan’s Copper Country. As an anthropologist and archaeologist, he innovates new conservation tools and dating techniques for archaeological artifacts; reconstructs past technology transfers, facilitates wise use of heritage assets; and uses fieldwork as a space for public discussion about ecological remediation and land-use planning.
